Spank the Monkey

Where did this term come from? I'm not comparing, but mine doesn't look like a monkey and I'm not spanking it. It's kinda sensitive to corporal punishment. Maybe there is someone out there more perverted then me dressing up his John Thomas like Bonzo and flogging it merrily.
